Treatments
Dry Eye Treatment may include a humidifier to put more moisture in the air, hot compresses and lid scrubs with baby shampoo, which help to provide a thicker, more stable lipid layer. Artificial tears, lubricating eye drops, gels and ointments help provide more moisture and lubrication for the surface of the eye. Sometimes with chronic DES a medicated drop called RESTASIS is prescribed.
Other Treatments Available Include:
-
Artificial tear inserts that dissolve slowly when placed under the eyelid.
-
Temporary or permanent plugs in the tear drain ( punctum ) to allow the eyes time to gain full use of the lubricating tears before they are drained away from the eye.
-
Laser treatment or minor surgery to close the punctum permanently.
